NEW SOFTWARE requirement for entering undergraduate students
Classroom/Clinical Software Requirement
Georgia Baptist College of Nursing implemented a technology requirement for all incoming students effective Fall 2009. Each entering student (for Fall 2009 - students enrolled in NUR 302 or NUR 303) is required to incorporate the Nursing Central® software from Unbound Medicine onto a handheld device, such as a personal digital assistant (PDA). This provides a direct link to medical reference materials. Research supports the use of medical-based software to facilitate safe care of patients. Beginning Fall Semester 2009, course fees will include a subscription to the required software. Students may choose either:
Palm device – OS 5 or later (PDA/smartphone)
Windows Mobile / Pocket PC (PDA/smartphone)
BlackBerry smartphone
iPhone / iPod Touch
Please visit: http://www.unboundmedicine.com/store/nursing_central_pda_wireless for specific requirements. DO NOT purchase software from this site but take time to review application download requirements and mobile web requirements. The Nursing Central® software requires approximately 42 MB of space. Memory cards (i.e. SD card) can be added to most devices that do not meet the memory requirement. Students will initially register for this program on campus. Following the initial registration process, students will download and update their device from their own computer.
The Nursing Central® software includes a drug handbook, lab handbook, disease manual, and Taber’s Medical Dictionary. By purchasing this software, students eliminate the need to purchase some previously required textbooks. This also allows students to update their materials while in college and avoid purchasing an updated textbook. In a nutshell, the software will replace “five pounds of books and eight inches of shelf space.”
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course completion
To participate in clinical education, students are required to attain the American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR Certification. Students must submit the CPR card, as evidence of completion of this requirement. Certification must be through the American Heart Association to meet the requirements of our clinical agencies, some of which accept only American Heart Association certification. Please Note: The College will not accept the Family and Friends or Heartsaver courses as substitutions for the Health Care Provider certification.
- The Health Care Provider certification includes Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), adult, child, and infant, one and two person. CPR. This level of certification also includes adult, child, and infant, conscious and unconscious foreign body airway obstruction. The College of Nursing will be offering two CPR courses prior to the start of Fall 2009 classes. Students only register for ONE of these courses. The dates that CPR will be offered at the College of Nursing are: August 1 8:00-4:00 and August 22 8:00-4:00. Classes meet in classroom 314 and classroom 320 (third floor) at the College of Nursing.
- CPR classes fill up quickly and early registration is strongly encouraged. To reserve your space in ONE of the classes, contact Professor Fran Kamp (Kamp_F@Mercer.edu). Students must pre-register to attend the class. The fee for the class is $75, and payment is made at the time of the class session. Payment can be made with a check or money order, made out to “Instructional Services.” Cash is also accepted.
· Students must also purchase the course book PRIOR to class. The BLS for Healthcare Provider, by the American Heart Association will be available at the Mercer-Atlanta bookstore. The bookstore is not open on Saturdays. Bookstore hours are: Monday through Thursday 9:00am – 5:00pm and Friday 9:00am – 4:00pm.
