Enrollment Information - May 2012

All newly accepted students (BSN, RN-BSN, MSN, DNP and PhD) to the College of Nursing are required to complete steps for enrollment.   Please read carefully all instructions below, in order to prepare for class and clinical.

Reservation Form and Deposit

Once accepted to the College of Nursing, applicants should complete the Reservation Form indicating the intent to enroll.  This form, along with a $200 non-refundable deposit, reserves the applicant’s place in the program.  An applicant’s place in the program is not secure until this deposit is received by the Admissions Office.  Additional enrollment requirements are listed below.

Immunization and Health Documents

Georgia Baptist College of Nursing of Mercer University requires nursing students to submit health information and maintain updated immunization records.  The following three documents should be reviewed carefully to ensure compliance with immunization and credentialing (click on title of each document).

1. Required IMMUNIZATION and CREDENTIALS

2. Information on REQUIREMENTS about TITERS

3. Nursing Immunization Record
NOTE:  Proof of Negative PPD dated/tested May 1- August 15, 2012
(Complete the Nursing Immunization Record and ATTACH actual test results to this record)

Complying with these requirements safeguards the health and safety of students in the classroom and clients in clinical setting. Students not meeting the specified requirements will be excluded from clinical and/or class. [NOTE: A student who attended Mercer University-Macon campus MUST retrieve their health information from the Macon campus health office and update immunizations to meet nursing credentialing requirements; the College of Nursing cannot retrieve these records for you.]

Please note: Receiving the flu vaccine is very important and is a requirement for all Mercer University BSN, RN-BSN, MSN, and DNP students, regardless of whether you are in clinical courses.  Students MUST have proof of current flu vaccine on file with either the undergraduate or graduate programs administrative office.   Flu vaccines must be documented on program entry and annually renewed AFTER September 1st.  The deadline date for submitting proof of flu immunization is October 12, 2012

All Mercer University nursing students must submit the completed Nursing Student Immunization Record and copies of supporting documents (including actual lab results: serology reports for Titer, PPD/TB skin test results, and proof of flu vaccination after September 1) to be considered ‘immunization compliant’ and allowed to complete further enrollment and registration requirements.  Failure to comply with submission of health documents will result in removal from all nursing coursework.  We are contracted with agencies to comply with immunization requirements.

Nursing Clinical Credentialing Documents

The College of Nursing requires students to submit additional credentialing documents as part of enrollment. Credentialing guidelines include:
  • CPR Cards:  All Mercer University nursing students must submit an American Heart Association, Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification card.  The card must be signed, copied (front and back side), and on file in the College prior to beginning courses.  Please Note: The College will not accept the Family and Friends or Heartsaver courses as substitutions for the Health Care Provider certification (no exceptions).  [If you need to register for a CPR class, see information below].
  • Health Insurance:  Mercer University nursing students in BSN, RN-BSN, MSN, DNP programs, both new and returning students, are required to have personal health insurance.  To ensure that all students have insurance coverage, students are automatically enrolled in and billed for health insurance with Pearce and Pearce, Inc.  If a student has an active health insurance policy, other than Mercer University’s policy, the student can exempt this charge by waiving the Pearce and Pearce coverage at www.studentinsurance.com.   The student is responsible for the insurance charge if a waiver for coverage is not made through this web site prior to posted deadline.  Proof of personal health insurance MUT be on file [UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS (Prelicensure and RN-BSN) submit to: Ms. Deb Bailey (Office 218); GRADUATE STUDENTS (MSN, DNP) submit to: Ms. Tonya Flemons (Office 219).  If accepting Mercer’s health insurance, the temporary print ID is acceptable until the cared arrives.
  • HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act Statement):  All nursing students (graduate and undergraduate) must submit a printout indicating completion of Mercer University’s HIPAA online training.  The printout must include the date taken and the score received.  Read information below regarding completion of training.
  • OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration:  All pre-licensure and non-actively practicing nurses must submit a printout indicating completion of Mercer’s OSHA online training.  The printout must include the date taken and the score received.  Read information below regarding completion of training.

SOFTWARE requirement for entering undergraduate students

Classroom/Clinical Software Requirement

All students admitted to the undergraduate prelicensure, MSN, or DNP programs are required to incorporate the Nursing Central® software from Unbound Medicine onto a handheld device, such as a personal digital assistant (PDA).  This technology provides a direct link to medical reference materials.  Research supports the use of medical-based software to facilitate safe care of patients. Course fees include a subscription to the required software.  Students may choose either:

Palm device – OS 5 or later (PDA/smartphone)

Windows Mobile / Pocket PC (PDA/smartphone)

BlackBerry smartphone

iPhone / iPod Touch

Please visit: http://www.unboundmedicine.com/store/nursing_central_pda_wireless for specific requirements.  DO NOT purchase software from this site but take time to review application download requirements and mobile web requirements.  The Nursing Central® software requires approximately 42 MB of space. Memory cards (i.e. SD card) can be added to most devices that do not meet the memory requirement. Students will initially register for this program on campus after classes begin.  [ONLY students enrolling in designated courses (see tuition/fee page) will be able to register for this software.]  Following the initial registration process, students will download and update their device from their own computer.

The Nursing Central
® software includes a drug handbook, lab handbook, disease manual, 5-minute clinical consult, and Taber’s Medical Dictionary.  By purchasing this software, students eliminate the need to purchase some previously required textbooks.  This also allows students to update their materials while in college and avoid purchasing an updated textbook.  In a nutshell, the software will replace “five pounds of books and eight inches of shelf space.”

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course completion

To participate in clinical education, students are required to attain the American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR Certification. Students must submit the CPR card, as evidence of completion of this requirement. Certification must be through the American Heart Association to meet the requirements of our clinical agencies, some of which accept only American Heart Association certification. Please Note: The College will not accept the Family and Friends or Heartsaver courses as substitutions for the Health Care Provider certification (no exceptions).

  • The Health Care Provider certification includes Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), adult, child, and infant, one and two person. CPR. This level of certification also includes adult, child, and infant, conscious and unconscious foreign body airway obstruction.
  • If you are in need of a CPR class, the College of Nursing will offer two CPR courses for Fall entry and continuing students. Accepted students can register for one of these courses. Registration can be made NOW for courses held on August 11 (Saturday) OR August 25 (Saturday).

(Students cannot register for both dates; only Mercer accepted students are permitted to register.  A list of August 25 registered students will be provided to course faculty/secretarial staff to satisfy all requirements, as listed on the Student Records Checklist.  Students must also note on their checklist if registered for the August 25 CPR class).

The cost for the course is $75 and is paid on the date of the course.  Cash or check (made out to Instructional Services) is acceptable.  CPR classes fill up quickly Students must pre-register to attend the class, and payment is made at the time of the class session.  NO “drop-ins” will be permitted to take the class.  You may register by clicking on ONE of the following dates:

August 11, 2012 (Saturday)
August 25, 2012 (Saturday)

Students must also purchase the course book PRIOR to class. The BLS for Healthcare Provider, by the American Heart Association will be available at the Mercer-Atlanta bookstore. Check the Mercer-Atlanta bookstore hours for specific information regarding book purchases and bookstore business hours (678.547.6350).

Preparing to Access Nursing Courses in "Moodle"
All nursing courses use Moodle as a "platform" for student coursework.  It is the student's responsibility to access course information using this system.  For summer semester courses will open on Saturday, May 12; fall semester courses will open in Moodle in mid August.  Some undergraduate and graduate courses utilize an online learning system called Blackboard Collaborate (formerly called Elluminate).   Students are responsible for viewing the online training session PRIOR to the start of classes.  Click the following link to begin training:  https://sas.elluminate.com/mr.jnlp?suid=M.C204D2F1987EEA81618F10C6FC2B94&sid=2009162.

Although you do not need to have a username or default password to enter the training session, you will need this information to access course information.  Your username and default password in both Moodle and Elluminate is your MUID; change your password after your initial log-in.  Moodle and Elluminate guides can be downloaded from the links below:
