Pam Garrett served as an adjunct faculty member for seven years before taking a position as a full-time faculty member at the College. She strongly feels that maintaining clinical expertise is essential to being an effective nurse educator. She continues to practice at the bedside as a staff nurse, which assists her in maintaining a current knowledge base and refinement of clinical skills.
Ms. Garrett specialized in adult health nursing with a subspecialty in oncology and hematology. She received certification in critical care (CCRN) in 1988 by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and maintains this certification today. Her previous nursing positions included employment as a critical care clinical nurse specialist for many years. She is credited with implementing the nurse internship program for new graduates entering critical care, as well as development and implementation of a hospital-based peritoneal dialysis program. Her employment history includes staff nurse positions in short stay surgery, telemetry, critical care, and oncology. Her areas of expertise/interest include ethics, end-of-life issues, acute and critical care nursing, diagnosis and management of renal failure, and preceptor/nurse reentry programs.
