2009 Faculty Development Workshop
Five Weeks (Thursdays):
January 29, February 5, 12, 19, 26
3:00 - 5:00 pm
Macon and Atlanta Interactive Video Classrooms
Leaders: Mary Ann Drake and Chris Grant
You are invited to apply to participate in a cross-University faculty development workshop on service-learning. Participants will receive a copy of the draft Mercer University Service-Learning Faculty Handbook, texts and readings about service-learning as a pedagogy, and helpful guidelines on conducting guided reflections. Mary Ann Drake, Chair of Interdisciplinary Studies in the College of Liberal Arts, has taught service-learning courses for over ten years, and has facilitated several Mercer faculty development workshops on service-learning. Chris Grant, Associate Professor of Political Science in the College of Liberal Arts, has also taught service-learning classes for over ten years and is the author of the Mercer Service-Learning Faculty Handbook.
Workshop space is available for 10 participants. Members of the workshop are expected to develop a service-learning course syllabus during the workshop and to pilot the course within two years of the workshop (2011). Participants will receive a stipend of $1,500.
Faculty members wishing to attend for their own exposure to the workshop material but without receiving the stipend are welcome and can indicate their interest in attending on the application form.
In order to facilitate faculty participation from throughout the University, the workshop will be conducted in the interactive video classrooms on the Macon and Atlanta campuses. This workshop is in addition to the service-learning workshop that has been held during the summer for the past few years and targets those faculty members who are not available during the summer months. Priority will be given to faculty members who have not taught a service-learning class before and have not participated in previous service-learning faculty development workshops.
Please complete the application form and submit to Lisa Snow (snow_la@mercer.edu.) Please note that the application requires the signature of your Chair if you are requesting the stipend.
Application Deadline: December 19, 2008
