Office of Research Compliance (ORC)

The breadth and scope of Mercer University's research and scholarship affect local, regional, and international arenas. These activities reflect Mercer's stated aspirations and goals for extending knowledge beyond the boundaries of our institution and for providing a quality educational experience for our students.

Research and scholarly practice embody the faculty's embrace of professional standards and ethics appropriate to their discipline and the day-to-day application of these standards. The foundation of our academic environment is built on the integrity of all members of our university community, in our accountability in complying with policies, and in following accepted standards in our professions. The faculty carries the responsibility for maintaining these standards into the learning environment. This includes the mentoring and training of students in research practices from the incorporation of ethical principles, to safe laboratory practice, to the application of research findings through publication and presentation. As such, each of us plays a significant role in fostering and nurturing the highest level of integrity in our environment.

The Office of Research Compliance (ORC) provides support and training for Mercer's faculty members, researchers, students, and staff in the regulatory requirements for the conduct of scientific research. The Office of Research Compliance is responsible for the development and implementation of university policies related to the use of human subjects in research, the use of animals in research, conflicts of professional interests, misconduct in science, and other regulatory compliance programs. The Office of Research Compliance also supports the University community in promoting the responsible conduct of research investigations.

Research activities are governed by a number of regulatory and compliance committees imposed by federal and state laws. Non-compliance can result in severe penalties to the institution and in some instances to the individual. It is the responsibility of all faculty members to be familiar with university policy as it relates to those areas of research requiring compliance with government regulations. The following are some areas that are commonly identified with certain research activities of faculty, staff, or students that are regulated:
