Sinusitis  

 --Suspect a sinus infection if a cold lasts longer than 7-10 days without improvement

Symptoms
 
  • coughing
  • sore throat
  • facial pain
  • fever
  • headache
  • thick nasal drainage
  • nasal congestion
  • pain in the teeth
   
Treatment
 
  • antibiotics may be necessary
  • acetaminophen or ibuprofen for relief of discomfort or fever
  • decongestants for nasal congestion
  • don't use decongestant nasal sprays more than 4-5 days
  • cough suppressants for relief of cough at night
  • drink plenty of liquids
  • throat lozenges for sore throat
  • gargle with salt water (1 tsp. salt in 1/2 glass warm water) for sore throat
  • blow your nose gently with both nostrils open
  • avoid smoking or smoke filled environments
  • get extra rest

  • fever over 101 F.
  • severe headache
  • vomiting
  • ear pain
  • swelling around the eyes
