Vaginal Infection - Vaginitis  
Vaginitis is inflammation of the vagina that may be caused by bacteria, yeasts, or allergy or chemicals.  Sexually tranxmitted diseases may cause vaginitis (see STD section). Fungus, such as yeast, may cause a thick white discharge with itching. Bacterial vaginosis may be caused by on overgrowth of normal vaginal bacteria. The discharge with bacterial vaginosis is usually a thin, grayish white with a fishy odor.
 
Symptoms
 
  • unusual vaginal discharge
  • itching or burning
  • burning with urination
  • redness of the external genital area
  • fishy or foul odor
   
Treatment
 
  • over the counter vaginal anti-fungal preparations for yeast infections
  • prescription medications, such as Diflucan, for yeast infections
  • prescription medications, such as Flagyl, for bacterial vaginitis
