Vomiting and Diarrhea  
Symptoms
 
  • loss of appetite or indigestion
  • nausea or vomiting
  • stomachache or abdominal cramping
  • weakness or lightheadedness
  • loose or watery stools
  • fever
   
Treatment
 
  • if vomiting, suck ice chips or drink small amounts of clear liquids such as Gatorade, lemonade, broth or clear soda
  • after vomiting has stopped for 8 hours, eat small amounts of bland foods such as rice, toast, Jell-O, cooked cereal, custard, eggs, bananas, pudding, yogurt, canned fruit, or baked potato
  • avoid alcohol, coffee, tea, caffeine, greasy or spicy foods
  • return to normal diet if soft foods are tolerated
  • avoid aspirin or ibuprofen due to stomach irritation but may take acetaminophen for pain or fever
  • some antidiarrhea medications may actually prolong diarrhea
  • avoid laxatives
   
Get Advice For
 
  • severe pain in the abdomen or rectum
  • blood in vomit or stools
  • fever over 101 F.
  • vomiting or inability to retain liquids for more than 12 hrs.
  • vomiting after a head injury
  • vomiting associated with stiff neck
  • signs of dehydration, such as excessive thirst, dry mouth and skin, dizziness, and decreased urination
  • symptoms lasting longer than 2 days
  • swollen, hard abdomen
