David G. Garber

Assistant Professor of Old Testament and Hebrew

David G. Garber, Jr. is the Assistant Professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at McAfee. He received his B.A. in Religion from Baylor University (1995), his M.Div. and Th.M. from Princeton Theological Seminary (1998-99), and his Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible from Emory University (2005). Before this position, Dr. Garber served as an adjunct professor at McAfee for three years while finishing his dissertation on "Trauma, History, and Survival in Ezekiel 1-24." He teaches courses in Old Testament, Hebrew Exegesis, Social Justice in the Old Testament, The Theology of Ezekiel, and The Book of the Twelve.

In his research, Dr. Garber explores the usefulness of trauma theory as an interpretive lens for biblical study. He is currently the co-issue editor for a volume of Review and Expositor on faith and trauma (forthcoming in 2008) and is preparing an expository article on Nahum 3 for the volume, investigating how trauma theory can impact the interpretation of this very difficult text.

The use of biblical motifs in popular culture also fascinates Dr. Garber, who is preparing an essay that examines the battered woman motif in biblical texts and its reemergence in the television shows Carnivàle and Battlestar Galactica. As a result of his study of the prophets, Dr. Garber also reads biblical texts as foundations for social justice in the Church and society. In addition to his teaching and research, Dr. Garber currently serves as the chair for the Hebrew Scriptures/Old Testament section of the Southeastern Commission for the Study of Religion (SECSOR).
