Nancy L. deClaissé-Walford
|
Professor of Old Testament and Biblical Languages and Advisor for the Academic Research Concentration at McAfee
Dr. deClaissé-Walford came to McAfee from George W. Truett Theological Seminary in Waco, Texas, where she was a lecturer in biblical languages. She earned her bachelor's degree in Ancient History from California State University in Northridge, California, a master's degree in Semitic Languages and Literature from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, and a doctor of philosophy in Old Testament from Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Dr. deClaissé-Walford is the author of Reading from the Beginning: The Shaping of the Hebrew Psalter, Biblical Hebrew: An Introductory Textbook, The Book of Psalms: A Song from Ancient Israel, and the New International Commentary on the Old Testament: The Book of Psalms (forthcoming). In addition, she has published articles in various journals and books. She is the Managing Editor of the journal Review and Expositor and is active in the Hebrew Scriptures/Old Testament section of the Southeastern Commission for the Study of Religion and is a member of the steering committee of the Book of Psalms section of the Society of Biblical Literature.
Nancy enjoys speaking with students about vocation, calling and reminds us to, "Follow your passion!" She believes God instills in each of us a drive, a motivation, that will not let go of us--a passion! She discovered her passion twenty-four years ago in a classroom at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. It was in that classroom that she discovered the Hebrew language. She went on to study Advanced Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic, Ugaritic, Syriac, and Akkadian, and also studied Sumerian, Egyptian, and various Northwest Semitic Languages.
An expert in Hebrew and Psalms, one of her joys and tremendous responsibilities of teaching seminary students is the “immediacy” of every teaching moment. Seminary students are practitioners who are likely to take what she says in the classroom today and teach it in a Bible study tonight or incorporate it into a sermon on Sunday. Nancy takes great care when she prepare lectures, designs discussions, or prepares to debrief a reading assignment, to ask how her students will be able to use the course content in a church setting.
Dr. deClaissé-Walford is married and has two children, four miniature dachshunds, an iguana, and a huge vegetable garden. She met her husband, Steve deClaissé-Walford, at Fuller Theological Seminary. Their four miniature dachshunds actually run the house. Her summer vegetable garden typically includes potatoes, squash, tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, green beans, black eyed peas, blackberries, and rhubarb. And the winter garden yields broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts, lettuce, and cauliflower.
