Thomas B. Slater is the Professor of New Testament Language and Literature. He received his B. A. from Arkansas Tech University, his M. Th. and D. Min. degrees from Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University and his Ph. D. from King's College, The University of London. He was associate professor of Religion and African American Studies at the University of Georgia. He has been pastor of five churches, associate pastor in three others, and has been a campus minister before coming to teach at McAfee School of Theology. At McAfee, he teaches both introductory and advanced courses in New Testament.
Dr. Slater has published one book and over 20 scholarly articles in leading scholarly journals and venues around the world. Dr. Slater is most proud of his monograph, Christ and Community, which discusses the sociological dimensions of the images of Christ in the Apocalypse to John; his commentary on 1, 2 & 3 John in True to Our Native Land, the first commentary written entirely by African American scholars; his article on the Son of Man in New Testament Studies; his article on Col. 1:2 and Eph. 1:1 in Biblica; and his very first article, a note on the structure of Matthew, in Journal of Biblical Literature. He is currently completing a commentary on Ephesians for Smyth and Helwys, along with forthcoming articles for the New Interpreters Dictionary of the Bible.
Dr. Slater serves as an itinerant elder in the Georgia North Region of the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church where he is on the Committee on Conference Relations and the Committee on Ministerial Examinations. His wife, Olivia Elaine, and he have two daughters. Dr. Slater is an avid golfer and enjoys writing short stories.
