THE McAFEE NETWORK

 

            The McAfee Institute for Healthy Congregations works to provide a variety of resources to encourage effectiveness in congregational ministry.  The McAfee Network is a group of trained consultants serving local churches as independent contractors through referral by the Institute.  Each consultant develops his or her own agreements, fees and processes.  Neither Mercer University nor the McAfee School of Theology assumes responsibility for the work of any consultant.

 

            The Network also seeks to train and certify a growing number of consultants to expand the availability of services in the region of the Southeast.  The following serve by referral through the McAfee Institute.

 

JOHN B. ADAMS, M. DIV.

 

            Rev. John B. Adams is Director of Administration and Congregational Care at the D.A. & Elizabeth Turner Ministry Resource Center of the Pastoral Institute in Columbus, Georgia. He is a graduate of Mercer University and the Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary with a concentration in Family Ministry.  He has served as pastor and/or staff member in both urban and rural settings, including more than sixteen years of bi-vocational ministry  His training and experience qualifies him for consulting with congregations in the areas of envisioning/revisioning congregational mission, clergy and lay leadership development, and mission development addressing the following concerns: positive mental health, conflict management, suicide prevention and intervention and community coalition building for advocacy for marginalized individuals and groups.  He is also a clergy coach.

FRED W. ANDREA, PH.D.

Dr. Fred W. Andrea III is Senior Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Aiken, South Carolina, where he has served since 1994.  He is a native of South Carolina and M.Div. and Ph.D. graduate of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. 

             He has served as pastor of four Baptist congregations including the First Baptist Church of Savannah, Georgia.  In addition to his congregational duties, he has taught seminary courses in pastoral ministries.

            He is a past President of the Rotary Club of Aiken, a Past-Moderator of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of South Carolina, and President of the Board of Directors of the Community Care and Counseling Center of Aiken.  He serves on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Aiken County and is a Past Chair of the Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce.  He has provided leadership to numerous church and community boards, agencies, and committees.  He is the Chaplain for the Aiken Department of Public Safety.  Andrea, a graduate of Leadership South Carolina and the 2001 Aiken Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year, is a contributor to various journals and collections of sermons.  He is a weekly newspaper columnist for the Aiken Standard.

            He is married to Barbara R. Morgan, a graduate of the College of Charleston and the University of South Carolina School of Law.  She is the Solicitor of the Second Judicial Circuit of South Carolina.  They are together the parents of four children:  Rebecca, who died in 1997; Margaret Campbell and Sarah Bramlett, public school teachers in Aiken County; and Morgan Purvis, a businessman in Savannah.

 

            Dr. Andrea had participated in consultations on church staff development for the McAfee Institute and is available for strategic planning, staff planning, and local church programming consultations.

ROY E. GODWIN, PH.D.    

 

Dr. Godwin brings skills from over forty years of ministry as pastor, associate pastor, missionary, professor, and denominational staff as well as over six years as a coach, consultant, and trainer in the business field. He holds the M.Div., Th.M., and Ph.D. degrees from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY, in which he worked primarily in the area of Church and Community Ethics focusing upon the affects of contemporary social change upon the local church and the role of the pastor and key lay leadership. He has been trained in Conflict Resolution and Management by John Savage, former President of Leadership Education and Development Consultants (L.E.A.D. Consultants) and by Speed Lees of the Alban Institute.

 

While serving as Director of Missions and Evangelism for the District of Columbia Baptist Convention he led in the starting of new churches, coordinated the work of language ministries, supervised the staff of an inner city Baptist center, trained pastors and lay leaders in church strategic planning, evangelism and outreach, and church growth. Since that time he has served churches in Massachusetts and Wisconsin as an intentional interim pastor. He has taught on the university level and has been an adjunct professor for six theological seminaries as well as supervised several Doctor of Ministry students. He has also worked as a coach, consultant, and trainer for a consulting firm in Milwaukee, WI.

 

 He is a Certified Professional Coach from Coach University, a Certified Coach for Retirement Options, Inc., and a member of the International Coach Federation.

KAREN G. MASSEY, Ph.D.

 

            Karen G. Massey is Associate Professor of Christian Education at McAfee School of Theology.   Formerly associate pastor and minister of education at Northside Drive Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, she has served in churches in Georgia and Kentucky. Dr. Massey has served as a contract professor, a Garrett Teaching Fellow, and a visiting professor in Christian Education at both the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and the McAfee School of Theology. She is a founding member and past president of the Christian Educator’s Network, a professional, ecumenical organization for ministers in the field of Christian education. Dr. Massey is also a founding member and current board member of the Certified Pastoral Educators’ Association. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia in Athens and a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Massey has completed further university studies at Harvard University and Boston College.  She works frequently with churches in faith development and support for Baptist women in ministry.

LARRY L. McSWAIN, S.T.D.

 

            Larry McSwain is Professor of Ethics and Leadership at McAfee School of Theology. A graduate of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary with the Doctor of Sacred Theology degree, he served 23 years on the Southern Seminary faculty.  He was Professor, Dean of the School of Theology and Provost prior to service as President of Shorter College 1993-2000.  He has worked as a consultant with numerous churches in planning and conflict issues.  He was chosen Consultant of the Year by the Home Mission Board and worked by referral with the Alban Institute in conflict consulting.  He is co-author of two books on church organization and conflict ministry, numerous articles and reviews.  He gives leadership to the McAfee Institute for Healthy Congregations and serves as director of the Faith and the City project of the seminary.

            RON McCLUNG, D. Min.

 

            Dr. Ron McClung has served as pastor of congregations since 1980 as well as a church planter and seminary professor in Ecuador as an international missionary.  He has been pastor of the Haddock Baptist Church in Haddock, Georgia since 1992 where significant growth in all dimensions of the church’s life can be observed, especially in mission involvement.  He is a graduate of Mercer University, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and Columbia Theological Seminary where he earned the Doctor of Ministry degree.  He is fluent in Spanish and has completed both the Institute For Healthy Congregations consultant training and Clinical Pastoral Education.  He serves on the Coordinating Council and Chair of the Missions Committee of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Georgia.  He works with churches in strategy planning, church growth strategies, and deacon ministry.

GREG SMITH, M.Div, MCM

 

Rev. Greg Smith has served congregations for over 25 years in Missouri, North Carolina and Georgia, in music, education and youth ministry.  He holds the Master of Church Music degree from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and the Master of Divinity degree from the McAfee School of Theology, Mercer University.  He has completed one unit of congregation-based Clinical Pastoral Education at the Baptist Counseling Center in Charlotte, NC.  He is qualified to administer the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and has completed the Core Essentials training in Leadership Coaching from Coach University.  He currently serves as pastor of Scott Boulevard Baptist Church in Decatur, Georgia. 

 

He is available for consulting or coaching in Strategic Planning, Ministry Leadership Teams, and Conflict Ministry.

KEITHEN M. TUCKER, D. Min.

 

            Dr. Keithen Tucker brings over 20 years of experience in pastoral ministry, denominational leadership and fund-raising to his work as a consultant with local congregations.  He holds the M.Div. degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and the Doctor of Ministry degree from Drew University.  He has completed basic Clinical Pastoral Education at NC Memorial Hospital, Chapel Hill; certified as an Intentional Interim by the Center for Congregational Health, Winston Salem, NC; and is a Certified Consultant, for the NC Baptist State Convention having completed the “Conflict Management and Resolution for the Local Church” series of seminars and consultations, based on the principles of John Savage former President of Leadership Education and Development Consultants (L.E.A.D. Consultants). He has served as pastor and interim pastor of churches in North Carolina and Georgia as well as Director of Church Relations, Wingate University. He has been involved in numerous denominational committees and programs as well as civic community projects.

 

He currently serves as Director of Marketing & Development, Baptists Today, Macon, Ga.
