The Tift College Scholars Program
In 1986, Mercer University and the Tift College Alumnae Association joined together to form a historic partnership to preserve the legacy of Tift College, a women's college in Forsyth, Georgia, that had merged with Mercer. Over the years, Mercer has honored its commitment to maintain the heritage, identity and ideals of Tift College, most notably through the Tift College Scholars Program. In Spring of 2001, Mercer's Board of Trustees voted to change the name of the School of Education to the Tift College of Education, an action which represents the University's continuing commitment to carry on the educational legacy of Tift College.
The program honors a select group of young women at Mercer with scholarships and inclusion in one of the University's most distinguished scholastic organizations. A Tift College Scholar is known for her intellect, spirituality, commitment and dedication to her school, family, church, and community.
Currently, there are more than 175 Scholars on Mercer's Macon campus, pursuing careers in liberal arts, business, education, and engineering.
In an organization that can only exist with participation, Scholars participate in monthly meetings and alumnae events, including the Holiday Tea and Alumnae Weekend. There are many benefits associated with being a Tift Scholar, but the greatest reward of all is becoming a part of an enduring legacy that began at Tift College more than 150 years ago and continues today at Mercer University.
