Do we have too many schools/colleges in the University? Should we start new ones? Should we combine some existing schools/colleges to minimize administrative overhead, and to encourage more collaboration across disciplines? I believe Mercer should reorganize its undergraduate schools. Maybe Business and/or Education should return to the College of Liberal Arts. Or perhaps a new STEM school (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) should be formed with faculty from the College of Liberal Arts and the School of Engineering: Math, Computer Science, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Science, and all the Engineering Departments. This would enable us to establish a stronger science presence within the university, help us to capitalize on the investment into new science facilities currently under way, and facilitate the establishment of graduate programs in these fields. |

Does it matter? The president has changed, but unless he forces change, the level of management below him will continue in their failed management strategies. Mercer's problems are not unique. Other universities have addressed these same problems successfully. Why not follow their lead? The wheel doesn't need to be reinvented, but it does need to be rolled to move forward. |

Well, resources aside...do faculty, staff feel inclusive in the vision/growth of the university? What role can Mercer play in the national conversation about reconceiving secondary education and the first two years of college? (In other words, should we be putting so many of our eggs in a graduate school basket, especially since one can make the case that there are already too many graduate programs, at least in areas that are not affiliated with professional schools? Could we look at the last two years of high school, often "wasted" academically speaking, as an opportunity to encourage high schoolers to get a head start on an education at Mercer?) |

When I joined the university in 1998, I determined (God willing) that I would lead the Mercer physics department into the place of an obvious presence on the world wide web (www). Whether good, bad, or ugly in the view of those who judge our web-presence; one thing is clear--Mercer Physics has achieved that objective, and possibly with greater success than any other segment of the university. Evidence for my claim is to be found by typing various keywords into the premier search engine Google. The frequency with which Google directs its internet readers to the Mercer physics websites is hugely out of proportion to hits recorded for other physics departments similar to our own. The techniques used to accomplish this web-presence are not mysterious, nor are they unique to physics; I would be delighted to share their details with others. My unsuccessful efforts in doing so remind me of the scriptural verse, "voice of one crying in the wilderness". I believe that Mercer University is too much a collection of 'independent' thinkers, rather than cooperative individuals who could accomplish so much more if there were a genuine interest in 'talking shop' in a synergetic sense as opposed to 'talking politics' according to disjointed 'business as usual'. In my college of Liberal Arts there is way too much of the latter, and power rests like an everlasting (anti)gospel in the hands of a few who appear to do little else besides strive diligently to maintain their political influence. |

Are we going to develop the area around Mercer to energize the Mercer environment? |
Faculty |
|
You did not ask questions pertaining to the internal view of what it means to be a Mercerian. When I first came here I was invited into a community or "family." The term "Mercerian" meant more than just being a student or employee of this institution. There was a sense of accomplishment and pride in the term, as well as an open Christain attitude. Now people are saying to me "I no longer know what it means to be a Mercerian." We are slowly losing our identity because of the stress and fear that has been introduced into our community due to our current financial crisis. |

How can Mercer strengthen its sense of community within the University given the geographical barriers of a multi-campus system? |

Interaction with Atlanta and Savannah campuses. |
Faculty |

I think that Mercer should strongly promote itself as a “learning community.” What does this mean? One implication is that faculty are supported as they pursue scholarly endeavors, broadly defined, and are supported as they learn outside their disciplines. Another implication is that students and faculty learn together, whether it be in a research setting, in reading groups, or on service projects. In mathematics there is significant funding available (from the National Science Foundation) for departments that emphasize “vertical integration” wherein undergraduate students, graduate students, post docs, and faculty spend time learning together across the traditional vertical hierarchy. I imagine Mercer’s CLA as being a premier example of a college at which we tap the creative talents of all our members, student and faculty alike. |

Need to strengthen relationship between Macon & Atlanta campus |
Staff |

How can the campus come together? If we have committed people that are willing to look outside the box, then nothing is impossible. I think we should also have events where all people of the different schools are represented. It is wonderful to have public events for the community on campus, but they usually don't cater much to the student. What if we brought community volunteering to the campus? Where people that came, actually saw the students that go here, which may build their interest to go here. A session called "Knowledge you can use", where each school has a booth with helpful information for fellow students of this campus. |

How would reducing the student discount affect our ability to attract top students, and is there any other way to supplant that shortfall? |
Faculty |
|
You haven't asked, in this forum anyway, about necessary resources, so I'll say a word on that point. For Mercer to elevate its profile within the academy, one of the things it will have to do is to increase its support for faculty in travel and research. Faculty travelling to conferences, and presenting and publishing papers is an important way for the name of Mercer to get out into the wider academic community. To make sure that its students also directly benefit, however, Mercer should look to fund student travel to these conferences or to undergraduate conferences at which they can exchange ideas with other undergraduates from around the country. These kinds of trips not only help our students but they also could/should be key selling points to prospective students who are looking to experience academia outside of the classroom. |

You should ask about morale among faculty, staff, and students. I think it is lower that I have ever seen in 30+ years. The initial exhuberance occasioned by new leadership in the President's office was dashed by unprecedented staff layoffs and, in CLA, inability to renew visiting faculty. Both of these events will cripple our enterprise for the forseeable future. You should ask what we think can be done to make Mercer a better place to work and to learn. |

Someone mentioned moral at the meeting and this is definitely a question you need to ask. I know that in my department, this was an issue before the lay offs took place. However, the department heads were and are oblivious to it. We just feel like we are being asked to perform more and more and more work, but yet were are NOT being compensated for it! The fact that President Underwood has given us 2 'Staff Appreciation Days' has been a big boost. What can be done to improve the quality of cafeteria |
Parent |
|
Food service nutrition - I do feel that the diet of the students is important to their success. We know that a protien source and water improve a persons alertness and improves memory functions. Low fat choices should be available for each meal and snack. The entrees tend to be extremely high in fat and the vegetable choices tend to be limited and repetitive. Promoting a healthy diet as a longterm life style needs to include the institution's food service. |
Parent |
|
Comments: My son has not been very happy with the quality of the cafeteria food. In fact, he seldom eats there. In the meantime, he is required to have a meal plan that is costing $2000+ per semester. I would like to see this mandatory meal plan revised and/or more flexible. The cleaning service in the dorm bathrooms should be monitored more closely. I believe he complains regularly to residence life about the dirty shower stalls and toilets. My point: Mercer should be more forthcoming about the reality of life on campus. Improving this area would improve students attitudes toward the university. And students' opinions should be the basis of any vision because they are the best gauge of what really is going on and what needs to happen to make Mercer a better place. |

It might be productive to survey staff interested in serving of planning committees (sub-committees) and those areas in which they would be interested in contributing. With sub-committees focusing on a given specific (narrowed) topic (working within the University Planning Council), I believe the opportunity for executing plans within a defined area of interest will be possible, thereby moving Mercer closer to the "big" goals in a timely fashion. |

I can't think of anything else right now, but I would like to comment on the Vision Dialogue sessions. The one that I attended for faculty in Macon turned into a discussion on research vs. teaching and how heavy course loads are. Although I am a faculty member, I do not teach (except for some library instruction sessions). The discussion on research was interesting, but it kept us from having enough time to cover all of the questions. Perhaps in the future no more than two questions should be discussed within an hour. The moderator did a good job with pulling people back in to the focus of the discussion, but there just wasn't enough time for all of the issues. I was telling one of my student assistants about the meeting, and she said she had noticed the "teaching vs. research" debate during her time at Mercer. I encouraged her to visit the website and offer some ideas from her perspective as well. Thank you for allowing us to participate in this discussion! I think it's vital for the university to know where we're going so that we can all get there together. |

I think you have asked all the pertinent questions. I attended Lehigh University undergrad and Mercer for a graduate degree in education (reading specialist). I actually taught at Mercer for two semesters prior to moving to Florida. I am currently Director of Admissions at Darton College in Albany. I loved my time at Mercer, and I hope to see at least two of my three children become Mercer alums. Go Bears! |

I think I have covered everything on my mind with one important exception. I would not require the students to read the book that they were supposed to over the summer before freshman year entitled Whisper of the River. It does not cast Mercer in a good light, nor the Baptist faith, and it is not the kind of book most parents would want their children to read if they know what was in it. In a word, I believe the book is obscene. Just because it is written by a graduate of Mercer does not make it important or valuable reading! I hope I didn't sound overly critical because I believe Mercer is a great university and I am proud to say my son attends Mercer. |

You should also be asking what Mercer's perceived weaknesses are and how they might be addressed. |

When I was here, I was in a fraternity. I got the impression that the University did not support the Greek system. Is the Greek system growing? Impression is that Mercer wants to get rid of the Greek system. |

Note the redundancy in the first line of the mission statement ('learning'). As a liberal arts grad, I know what is meant by the term, but perhaps thought should be given to modernizing the prhase, i.e. broad-based. Is Greek life still relevant in the 21st century and does it contribute, or detract, from teh mission of teh University? Is it true that the pool was constructed improperly and thus disqualified from competition for not being of Olympic proportions? If so, why wasn't this corrected? |

I think it would be interesting to ask administrators, faculty, and staff: Do you have children who have attended or will soon attend college? If yes, what college or university did they attend (or what college do they plan to attend)? If other than Mercer, what was the basis of that choice? What would have made Mercer more desirable for them? |

Ideas for graduation!!! The UC is great for graduation but you could split up the colleges to have graduation at different times so that the students can invite their families and friends that have made such an impact in their lives. The students have worked very hard to get to this point in their lives. I personally have given Mercer a LOT of my money the past 5 years and worked so hard to get my Bachelors and Masters degree and I think I deserve to at least ask whoever I want to attend my graduation. I don't think it's too much to ask. All you have to do is put yourself in our shoes or our parent's or grandparent's shoes. How would you feel? |
