Mercer's Quality Enhancement Plan

The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the regional accreditor of the University, requires as a part of its accreditation process that the University come together to collaborate on a project to improve student learning. The name of this project is the Quality Enhancement Plan or QEP. The topic chosen by the University Planning Council (UPC) and approved by the President is "The Engaged University: Learning Together."

SUMMARY INFORMATION

What Is A QEP?
The Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) is part of the Reaffirmation Process for the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

What Is Mercer's QEP Topic?
The topic chosen by the University Planning Council (UPC) and approved by the President is "The Engaged University: Learning Together."

The framework of the QEP is collaboration across the University and the focus is moral development, which is articulated in academic work and the practice of service-learning.

Who Is Involved?
All the academic units are involved, as well as a number of the co-curricular units.

  • Undergraduate Units—increased service-learning opportunities and education in moral development
  • Professional and Graduate Units—collaboration to strengthen student education in applied ethics

What Are the Activities That Will Occur?

  • University-wide ethics seminar
  • Faculty/staff reading circles
  • Seminars and workshops on case-based instruction
  • Service-learning courses
  • Volunteer opportunities
  • Student-run volunteer clearinghouse
  • Mercer Student Scholars

What Are the Desired Outcomes?

  • Increased moral judgment
  • Increased moral commitment
  • Increased moral integrity
  • Increased climate of student engagement

What Is Your Role?

  • Students—are responsible for knowing what a QEP is and Mercer's QEP topic. Many will be participants of the Plan and will provide feedback to the faculty.
  • Faculty/Staff—have working knowledge of the QEP and to pass the information to the students.
  • Vice Presidents/Deans—ensure departmental faculty and staff awareness and to involve their respective college/school/unit in the planning and execution of the QEP.

What Is the Role of the UPC?
The UPC is comprised of members from all the colleges, schools, and administrative and educational support programs. The UPC was charged with developing the QEP and will monitor the progress of the Plan.

What Is the Role of OIE?
Mercer University's Office of Institutional Effectiveness (OIE) consists of Assessment, Institutional Research, and Planning, and provides support and oversight for the QEP. Periodically, this office will send out a newsletter informing the University community of the QEP.
