This conference is a call to responsibility to engage and inspire Mercer students and the Central Georgia community to answer the challenge of caring for God’s Creation. As a faith-based university in the Baptist tradition, Mercer is an ideal host for this conference, which aims to bridge the current gap between the faith and science communities on issues of climate change.

As evidence mounts that climate change is real and will pose unprecedented global challenges in the 21 st Century, the community of faith must take greater responsibility for the stewardship of God’s Creation. The science and politics of climate change have become increasingly polarized, the scientific community must communicate its findings to the public with scrupulous and judicious honesty. As citizens of the world responsible to our children and our neighbors, the scientific community and communities of faith must engage each other for the care of the creation and humanity.

Mercer University is holding this conference to provide students and members of the community to help equip them with the knowledge and skills to face these environmental challenges. As a member of the Central Georgia community, Mercer must act to raise local awareness of climate change, as well as address it through service-learning and applied research. This conference will bolster those efforts.

By inviting an array of talented and learned speakers from the faith and science communities, Mercer University hopes to inspire a change in the dialogue between people of faith and people of science and, in turn, inspire a new level of care for God’s Creation.
