Service Opportunities
Community Service Day
Saturday, October 31
Volunteer projects available throughout the semester. Dr. Tom Glennon is organizing the volunteer projects.
Weatherization: Insulating attics and windows in homes owned by elderly and indigent. Training and equipment will be provided by Rebuilding Macon. Service projects will take approximately two hours per house. There are 40 houses to be assisted. This project will begin in September and continue throughout the semester. Community & Educational Gardening: Develop at least two community gardens in various locations. Projects will start in October and finish on Saturday, October 31. Contact Allan Rene de Cotret decotret_ar@mercer.edu.
Green Wall Planting: Develop at last two “green wall” projects in the College Hill Corridor. Projects will begin in October and finish on Saturday, October 31. Contact Tom Glennon: glennon_tj@mercer.edu.
River Clean-Up and River Bank Restoration: Projects will be coordinated by Dr Brian Rood and Kathryn Doornbos. Details and sign-up to: rood_be@mercer.edu and/or kathryn.sydney.doornbos@student.mercer.edu.
Art: Students wishing to submit art or participate in art education project will work with community groups. Contact Tom Glennon: glennon_tj@mercer.edu.
Weatherization
Rebuilding Macon has provided us with an opportunity to reduce the carbon footprint of at least 40 elderly and disabled homeowners here in Macon. We need student and faculty volunteers on the following dates in September, October, November and December.
We need between 4 and 6 students each day from 9-12 to insulate attics and caulk windows, etc. Training will be provided. Here are the dates:
- Sept 15, 22 and 29
- Oct 6, 13, 20 and 27
- Nov 3, 10, 17 and 24
- Dec 1 and 8
We need between 4 and 6 student each day from 1-4 p.m. to insulate attics and caulk windows, etc. Training will be provided. Here are the dates:
- Sept 17 and 24
- Oct 1, 8, 22 and 29
- Nov 5, 12, and 19
- Dec 3 and 10
We need between 15 and 20 students to insulate attics and caulk windows from 9-5 on October 31 (Saturday).
